Adam, father of humanity

The Qur'an presents Adam as the first human, created directly by God, taught the names of all things, and honored by the angels' prostration (Qur'an 2:30–34). He and his wife slipped, repented, and were forgiven (Qur'an 2:35–37); Islam records no inherited sin from him. Genesis carries a parallel account of his creation and fall, read differently by each tradition. He stands at the head of the prophetic line that Islam counts as one message: submission to the One God.
