The Mahdi

المهدي

The awaited Mahdi, whose name matches the Prophet's ﷺ own name (per hadith)

An awaited figure, not a historical one. Hadith reports — Abu Dawud 4282–4290 and al-Tirmidhi 2230–2232 among them, graded sahih or hasan by hadith scholars — describe a man of the Prophet's ﷺ lineage, bearing his name, who will rule for a span of years and fill the earth with justice as it had been filled with injustice, in the era that leads to the return of Jesus. Sunni Islam awaits him as an ordinary man yet to appear; Twelver Shia Islam identifies him with the twelfth imam, held to be in occultation since 260 AH. This record files what the texts say; his story belongs to the future.

ERA Awaited — the end times
NOTABLE CONTRIBUTION

Foretold in hadith as a man of the Prophet's ﷺ household who will fill the earth with justice before the end of time; he has not yet appeared.

THE RECORD
  • Sunni and Twelver Shia traditions differ on his identity: a man yet to appear, or the twelfth imam in occultation.
  • Claimants to the title have recurred through history; the hadith description is the measure they are tested against.
